For some women, the nipple are pointed inwards instead of outwards, which is known as “inverted nipples”.
Infections and inflammations (mastitis) as well as other illnesses and radiation can also lead to inverted nipples. Apart from breastfeeding, inverted nipples do not cause any medical problems. However, they are burdensome for many women for aesthetic reasons.
During inverted nipple correction surgery, Dr. Colette Carmen Camenisch separates the strands of tissue that pull the nipples inwards and raises the nipples again, result in outward-pointing nipples.
Inverted nipples are caused by the mammary gland ducts being too short. If the nipples pull inwards too much, inverted nipples result. During the nipple correction, Dr. Colette Carmen Camenisch releases the milk ducts so that the nipple can expand outwards again.
It is possible that only one breast has such inverted nipples. In addition, nipples often have a different degree of inversion on each side.
